Here is a photo from late last season at Target Field, and I'm here to tell you why this photo could very well be what happens at Target Field until the All-Star Game festivities in mid July.
If the Twins don't add some front of the rotation starters and perhaps a bat or two, Target Field will be empty early on for numerous reasons.
First and foremost, it will be empty is because Twins fans will be sick of the organization trotting out this horrible roster and just plain ole not trying to win. Target Field brings in plenty of cash for the Twins to field a roster that is at the very least respectable. Of course they don't have the TV money of the Yankees and Dodgers of the world, but neither do a majority of teams and those teams can still add pieces with money. The Twins can no longer use money as an excuse.
The next reason Target Field could be empty until July of next season is the play of the Timberwolves and Wild thus far into the respective seasons. Both teams have started out very well this season and have high expectations of making the playoffs and maybe even a deep playoff run. As long as both teams stay healthy they will definitively be in hunt right until the end of their seasons in April. If both teams make it to the playoffs, that would extend their seasons into May and possibly even June, keeping the Minnesota sports fan away from Target Field. Also, around the same time NFL free agency and the NFL Draft will also be keeping the attention away from Target Field.
The final and main reason Target Field will be empty until the All-Star Game in July is because we won't see our prized prospects until then. We didn't see Gibson until June 29th this past season, and that was a move of desperation to try and save the season and try to bring back the crowds to Target Field and it failed and the Twins won't make that mistake again. That is why we won't see Meyer, Sano, Rosario, and Buxton until they are absolutely ready. They will ease them all into their seasons and make sure they are completely ready before bringing them to the major league level. These prospects are what the Twins higher ups are hanging their hats on to bring winning back to Target Field, and they won't rush them, so that they can try and justify not going out and spending money via free agency.
There is the old adage of you have got to spend money to make money, and this couldn't be more true for the Twins right now. If they don't spend money this offseason, they will lose out on the fan base that has been feeding them cash since Target Field opened in 2010.
