It's 18 games into the season for the Twins and the most impressive part about the Twins this season to me is.... the bullpen... Yes the bullpen it has been one of the best ones in the American League and one of the better ones in the whole Major Leagues. The Twins bullpen so far this season has been pretty much lights out and pretty much locked in as well. The bullpen so far 18 games into the season hasn't been over worked or under worked, to me it's being used like how everyone would like it to be used. Gardy has been able to go to the bullpen when he needs to and hasn't really has needed to go to it cause he has to, and that is thanks to the starting rotation. The bullpen guys are all pretty in a groove right now and know they spot in the bullpen right now. Let's take a closer look at the Twins bullpen so far.....
Josh Roenicke is the new guy in the Twins bullpen this year. He was with the Rockies last year and is 30 year old, so if he can keep pitching like he is right now he could stay around for a couple season. here are Roenicke's stats so far this season. 1-0, 1.69 ERA, 7 strikeouts, 5 walks.
Casey Fien was a huge surprise last season for the Twins he came up and pretty mcuh was the gem of the bullpen last season. He is pitching really well for the Twins so far. The only reason for his high ERA is because of the Grand Slam Tyler Robertson gave up and Fien was charged with 3 of the 4 runs that scored. Since then he hasn't allowed a run. Here is a glance at Fien's stats... 1-1, 4.70 ERA, 7 Strikeouts, 3 Walks
Brian Duensing has once again proven he is a much better pitcher out of the bullpen then he has when he was in the rotation for the Twins. Duensing hasn't seen much action this year yet. But when he has pitched he has looked pretty good so far. He has only allowed 2 runs this season. Duensing will mostly be used for getting left handed batters out but could he used as a long relief when needed. Here is a look at his numbers... 0-0, 2.84 ERA, 4 Strikeouts, 2 Walks..
Ryan Pressly is a 24 year old the Twins picked up last year in the Rule 5 Draft, which means the Twins have to keep Pressly on the Major League roster all season long or offer him back to the Red Sox for half the price. So far the Twins have liked what they have seen from Preesly. He has only pitched in 5 games so far but has looked pretty solid so far.He has only allowed 1 run so far in 7 1/3 innings pitched. Here are Pressly numbers 0-0, 1.23 ERA, 4 Strikeouts, 4 Walks
Perdo Hernandez was called up to make a spot start for the Twins against the O's and he has stuck away since his spot start. He has been used mostly as relief pitcher and could make a few more spot starts for the Twins. Haven't seen much of him yet but the Twins must like him to come him around. Here is a look at his stats. 0-0, 3.48 ERA, 4 Strikeouts, 3 Walks
Anthony Swarzak well he has a bit of an odd start to the season. He bruised his ribs during Twins Fest while he was wrestling with some of his teammates. The after he recovered from the rib injury he has his wisdom teeth pulled. But then when Liam Hendricks was send down to AAA, Swarzak was the one recalled from the minors. Since rejoining the Twins Swarzak has been the long relief solution for the Twins so far this season. Swarzak has pitched 3 or more innings in 4 of his appearances this season for the Twins. A look at his numbers so far. 1-0, 2.61 ERA, 7 Strikeouts, 2 Walks
Jared Burton was the bridge to Glen Perkins last year and it's the same this year. As Burton has been used in the 8th inning to hold the lead for the Twins and Perkins. Burton has pretty much been locked in this year. He has only allowed one run so far this season, and already has 10 strikeouts. Burton also signed a new contract over the off season for 2 years. So he will be a main part in the bullpen for the next couple season. 0-0, 1.08 ERA, 10 Strikeouts, 2 Walks
Glen Perkins is the closer for the Twins and he is doing just that closing other teams changed in the 9th inning. Perkins is a prefect 6 for 6 so far in saves this season. He is looked like he is embracing the role as the closer. He is just blow batters away right now with his fastball and with his nasty slider. Perkins is only 30 so he will likely be the Twins closer for the foreseeable future. Here is a glance has his early stats. 1-0, 2.35 ERA, 11 Strikeouts, 2 Walks, 6 Saves
The Twins bullpen total stats look something like this they have a 4-1 record so far and an 2.37 ERA(Ranks 4th in AL) 53 Strikeouts, 20 Walks, 17 Earned Runs, and an WHIP of 1.13( Ranks 4th in AL).
If I had to give out an early grade for the Twins bullpen I would give them a B- or B+ ... In close games this year they have been in lock down mode and have been keeping the team in the game even when they are trailing. If the Twins pen can keep it up the Twins could be better then people thought.
