After losing back to back games to the absolute worst team in baseball in the Miami Marlins, it's time for the Twins to stop this are we buyers or sellers crap and become sellers and their is one move in particular that they need to do first.
The Yankees just announced that starting first basemen Mark Teixeira will need season ending surgery on wrist leaving a huge hole in their lineup.
The Twins need to send Morneau that way ASAP, before the Yankees look elsewhere to fill this hole. Morneau is just as good defensively as Teixeira and his power numbers will benefit tremendously by the smaller park of Yankee Stadium.
The Twins could either ask for a back of the rotation type of pitcher who is MLB ready now or go for a high upside guy who is still a year or two away, straight up for Morneau. The Twins know they won't get a huge amount of prospects since Morneau's power numbers are down, but they can definitively get a high upside guy in Low A ball who is two years away.
The other beautiful thing about this deal is that it truly is a rental for the remainder of the season. Teixeira is still under contract next season and Morneau's contract is up at the end of the season and can sign anywhere he likes, even right back in MN!
If I'm Terry Ryan, I'm picking up the phone and trying to figure something out with Yankees GM Brian Cashman and making it happen ASAP. Then I explain to Morneau that we will be pursuing him to come back heavily after this season. I think he would be more than willing to come back if the Twins tell him that up front allowing the Twins to get a prospect in return for maybe just 2 to 3 months of Justin Morneau.
Even if the Twins couldn't bring Morneau back, now is the time to pounce and move Morneau. The Yankees have a HUGE need and are in complete contention for a playoff spot and should be willing to give up a solid prospect in return for him.
Last year, the Twins didn't move Willingham when they should have and it has cost them, please don't make the same mistake twice and move Morneau while you still have a chance.
