The Twins are heading towards a 4th straight 90 loss season and they need to actually move some of these veterans to allow some of these young kids to get a shot to prove if they can help us in the future or not. The Twins have not taken advantage of selling high in recent years and need to start taking advantage of selling high if they want to turn this franchise around.
The Twins only have one piece this season that they can sell high on and that's catcher Kurt Suzuki. Suzuki is having a career year at the plate with an average of .305 and on base of .364 and represented the Twins at Target Field last week at the All-Star Game. Suzuki can help provide some offense to a team in the playoff race at a position that is hard to find offense from. Teams like the Cardinals and Orioles have all-star catchers who are currently injured and won't be back for some time who could use Suzuki's services. The Mariners could also be a logical landing spot since they still have two young unproven catchers. Suzuki could help groom those young catchers in his time there, while providing an offensive spark to help them reach their first post season birth in quite some time.
A few other pieces the Twins could possibly move are OF/DH Josh Willingham, 1B/DH Kendrys Morales, SP Kevin Correia and 3B Trevor Plouffe. While none of these guys will bring us back a big name prospect, they still can bring back prospects who can add depth to the organization. When it comes to Suzuki, he could actually land a prospect in the lower minors with a very high upside. While the fans may not like getting more prospects, the Twins need to move these players to make way for the young ones ready to show if they will be apart of our future or not.
It's time for the Twins to find out if catching prospect Josmil Pinto can truly be our everyday catcher. It's time to see if pitching prospects Alex Meyer, Trevor May, Logan Darnell and Michael Tonkin are going to help us from 2015 and beyond. It's time to give Kennys Vargas a taste of the majors as well. He may not be a full time player until the end of next season, but allowing him to learn what it takes to be a major leaguer will only help his development. We saw that Hicks should have been given a shot as a September call up in 2012 and had he been shown what it's like for that month, I think things would be a lot different for him now.
The Twins need to start moving players at the end of deals to add depth to the organizations and give some of these young guys a shot. These guys need to be rewarded after good minor league seasons by coming up here in September and truly learning what it takes to be a major leaguer. There is no reason Sano shouldn't have been at Target Field last September and the Twins need to learn to reward these guys and allow them to grow. Keeping these guys in the minors for too long stunts their growth as well. What happened to old Twins who used to bring up the young guys all the time back when we were winning division titles?
All in all, if the Twins stand pat yet again at the deadline and don't promote a bunch of the young guns this September, then why should anyone even visit Target Field for the rest of this season? The self serving beer machine? Looking for all-star clearance gear? Those would be about the only two reasons I can come up with to visit Target Field for the rest of this season.
