With Spring Training around the corner, I'm here to tell you why the Twins should already be planning for 2015.
This upcoming season is suppose to be the arrival of our top prospects Miguel Sano (pictured), Byron Buxton, Eddie Rosario, and Alex Meyer. I personally think that at best case scenario these 4 guys should be September call ups. There are a ton of reasons why they should get extended time in the minors this season.
If the Twins keep these 4 in the minors for the majority of the season, they can bring them up around relatively the same time and allow them to play together for as long as possible to try and capture the first World Series title for the Twins since 1991.
Meyer is a Scott Boras client, so the Twins will not be able to get him to sign an extension before he becomes a free agent. Sano is having issues with his elbow and could end up having Tommy John and be out until 2015. Another highly touted prospect in Eddie Rosario has been suspended for the first 50 games this year. He was going to start the year in Triple-A and had he started well could have been up by late June and now won't be starting his season until then, making his timeline closer to 2015 of when he'll be major league ready. Buxton will start at Double-A and regardless of how well he starts he is just 20 years old and having him play between there and Triple-A until September won't hurt him or his future.
Keeping these 4 guys in the minors until September also allows the Twins time to give more at bats to Arcia, Hicks, and Pressley to see who will be a part of our future and who won't. It'll also allow the Twins to figure out between the Dedunos, Diamonds, Worleys, etc. who also can be a part of our future. Possibly also give Gibson more valuable innings.
These 4 guys could be the core of the next championship team here in Minnesota, and with the uncertainty of Sano's elbow and Rosario missing a huge chunk of the season due to suspension, there is no reason to rush Meyer and Buxton to the majors. By not rushing them, it'll allow the Twins to get a better read on some other players of whether or not they can help us. It'll also allow them to get the most out of Meyer, while they have their best offensive prospects at the major league level.
2014 is going to be a transition season anyways, why force anything you don't have to force? Force Meyer to pitch entirely out of his mind to get to the majors. Force Buxton to continue to play like the next Mike Trout at Double-A and Triple-A before bringing him North the Twins Cities. The Twins have some stop gaps and bridges on this roster, so now is the time to use that competition to try and keep this nucleus together and bring them North in generally the same time frame, to take advantage of as many seasons as they'll have together and try to bring a championship back to Minnesota.
